The Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association’s (APRA) Chief Operating Officer, Mark Kothe recently announced that the association will hold their third Electrical Clinic of 2013 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28.

Kothe stated, “Two years ago we held a very successful Electrical Clinic in Quebec City with the help of APRA member Steve Venne of Atelier Dynamo. Steve is on-board with us again this year, helping APRA provide training to his fellow rebuilders/remanufacturers in Canada. And of course since we will be in Montreal this year we will also be presenting the clinic in both English and French.”

Two tours are on the schedule for Friday, Sept. 27. The first will be a tour of Beauharnois generating station, one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the world. Equipped with 38 generating units stretching for nearly a kilometre, it's one of Hydro-Québec's most powerful generating stations. The second tour will be of Bombardier, where we will visit both the museum and the BRP plant, where motorized recreational vehicles, including the celebrated Ski-Doos and Sea-Doos, are manufactured. The industrial visit of the BRP plant allows a glimpse into the many stages of Sea Doo production, from the manufacturing of parts to the assembly of the vehicles.

The clinic will be held at the Sheraton Montreal Airport Hotel and the program will feature the following speakers and presentations:

Steve Venne, Atelier Dynamo, will talk about the new 44MT, taking a look from the inside, and the IMT from Delco / CAT and the PA90 and PA90L from Denso. Steve will also discuss the new brushless alternator from Leece-Neville and address the place of the rebuilder in today’s remanufacturing industry.

Al Steadman, Litens, will discuss the latest generation of Litens OAD which incorporates a special self-releasing clutch to handle damaging transient events. Al will speak about a fleet in New England that installed a larger alternator onto its vehicles and caused quite a bit of engine damage (including broken belts and broken crank pulleys). A Litens OAD was designed and fitted to the larger alternator and the fleet problem was solved. He will also touch on the fact that clutch pulleys are now becoming a scheduled service item.

Jean Pierre Lefebvre, Exide Technologies, Gerant Regional/Regional Manager and Frederic Pare, Exide District Sales Manager, will talk about how batteries are ever evolving. Government regulations for air quality and MPG improvements are driving the need for longer lasting batteries. Some of these batteries require specialized testers and chargers. Exide will focus on not only the basics of battery construction and testing, but also what is needed for advanced flooded type batteries and the interactions with the charging and starting systems.

Mohammad Samii, owner of Sammy’s Auto Electric will give the group an update on newer vehicle technologies related to electrical rebuilding, as well as present rebuilding techniques for some newer, but commonly used alternators and starters.

There will be a Mini-Exposition for suppliers who wish to display their literature and small parts that will be open on Sept. 27 and 28 prior to the start of the clinic, during lunch and the coffee breaks.
