California shop named 2012 Top Shop

NEW ORLEANS — After sorting through more top-of-the-line shops than ever, the winner of the 2012 Motor Age Top Shops contest rose to the top.

Certified Automotive Specialists, owned by Gene and Robin Morrill in Glendora, Calif., is the overall winner. The announcement was made Friday evening at the ASRW Industry Awards and AMI Graduation.

The Morrills have grown their into a 7,800-square foot facility in Glendora, Calif., since purchasing the shop in 1985 Gene Morrill has taken countless classes, earned his AMM designation and degrees to teach courses at the college level.

Certified Automotive Specialists for decades has been affiliated with AAA (four-time quality award winner), ASE (Blue Seal Shop), ASCC, ASA, AMI and BBB. Overall, it is a quality operations adapting well to the changing marketplace.

“Gene and Robin have done an excellent job of bringing on board people who understand how to reach today’s customers,” says Tschanen Brandyberry, Motor Age managing editor. “They have adjusted well to both changing vehicle technologies and changing management techniques to be a success for nearly 30 years.”

The shop will be featured on the cover of December’s Motor Age. In addition to a look at the Morrills’ operation, the magazine will cover the other nine shops that made the 2012 Top Shops list. They are:

Pellman’s Automotive Service Inc.

Rick’s Automotive Inc.
Virginia Auto Service

“The quality of shops that entered this year was higher than in any year past. This is a true testament to the number of owners in the U.S. who realize quality from training to marketing to management is important in surviving in today’s economy,” Brandyberry says. “Owners are making their businesses better, and we are proud that we can showcase these shops, and others throughout the year, to continue to make the industry better.”
