The scholarships aimed to impress upon young drivers the importance of staying safe while in the driver’s seat. Representatives from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, KeyBank, Kumho Tires and The Mid-Ohio School selected two students to receive the valuable scholarships. Paul Chao, a senior from Dublin Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio, won a scholarship for his video submission on the importance of safe driving. He was able to demonstrate the importance of avoiding various distractions many teen drivers encounter daily.

The scholarship was open to all Ohio teenagers with a learner’s permit or a driver’s license and includes enrollment for the student and a friend or relative in a 2013 Honda Teen Defensive Driving Program from the Mid-Ohio School of Driving, a set of four performance tires from Kumho Tire and a $500 debit card from KeyBank. Students’ Key to Safe Teen Driving Scholarship applications could include a 200-word essay, a 60-second video, or a picture with brief commentary sharing what they have accomplished with friends, in school or in the community to promote safe driving among their peers. Representatives from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, KeyBank, Kumho Tires and The Mid-Ohio School selected two students to receive the valuable scholarships.

"Kumho is pleased to have teamed with the Mid-Ohio School and KeyBank to offer Paul Chao this scholarship for demonstrating his dedication to the importance of safe driving,” said Rick Brennan, vice president of marketing for Kumho Tire U.S.A. “As a tire company, we are happy to give back to our communities. Fall and winter are seasons full of inclement weather, school events, holidays and an increased amount of traveling. It is our hope that by bringing awareness to the importance of safe driving, we will be able to keep our teen drivers safe on the roads.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are the leading cause of death in the United States among people ages 15 to 20, with nearly 5,000 teenage fatalities each year. The National Safety Council estimates that 1.6 million automobile crashes occur due to texting and cell phone use each year in the United States.

The Key to Safe Teen Driving Program visited five states and 14 cities over 24 dates during the summer of 2012.  Nearly 1,700 teens completed one-day classroom and behind-the wheel instruction put on by Kumho Tire, KeyBank and The Mid-Ohio School. Now in its fourth year, the Key To Safe Teen Driving program has instilled defensive driving habits and techniques in over 5,000 young drivers.
