CHRYSLER 45RFE/5-45RFE/68RFE SOLENOID ASSEMBLY CHANGE

Jan. 1, 2020
In 2003, a program change in the computer caused the 45RFE (4 speed) to become a 5-45RFE (5 speed). One year later, a running change was made to the 45RFE/5-45RFE solenoid assembly.

In 2003, a program change in the computer caused the 45RFE (4 speed) to become a 5-45RFE (5 speed). One year later, a running change was made to the 45RFE/5-45RFE solenoid assembly (Figure 1). This change was designed to reduce operational noise from the solenoid assembly. The previous version used a needle valve and seat configuration (Figures 2, 3 and 4) whereas the revised assembly utilizes actual pulse width modulated style solenoids (Figure 5).

This change affected the hydraulic circuits casted into the assembly (Figure 6) causing the solenoid assembly’s screened gasket to change as well (Figure 7).

The solenoid assembly contains the transmission range sensor and range sensor selector plate. The pocket for the T41 pin in the selector plate was made 0.038-inch deeper as well (Figure 8).

When this change took place, the original solenoid assembly’s black color connector was changed to white for identification purposes (Figure 1).

This solenoid body and transmission range sensor selector plate as an entire assembly will service all previous models. Should this white connector solenoid body be used with a previous design transmission range sensor selector plate an incorrect T41 signal will be produced. It is possible to carefully modify the T41 pocket by making it 0.038” deeper with a dremel tool if need be.

When the 68RFE was introduced in 2006, although the transmission was redesigned internally, it still utilized the white connector solenoid assembly. It was in 2011 that this solenoid assembly was once again redesigned and now has a grey connector. This assembly does not retro fit back to any earlier vehicles. Interestingly, the white connector solenoid assembly can still be usedto service all models. The February Powertrain Pro article has additional information regarding this new design assembly.
