The NGK F1 Powerboat Championship Series will wrap up its first year on the Ohio River on September 30th and October 1st, with over 40 racers competing at RegattaFest in New Martinsville, WV. This will be the sixth and final race in the inaugural year of the NGK Spark Plugs F1 Powerboat Championship, with NGK Spark Plugs as the title sponsor and Formula 1 National Champion Tim Seebold at the helm. And yet this final race almost didn’t happen at all.
The final race in NGK’s premiere power boat championship series was originally scheduled forDSC_4883 Orange, Texas on September 15th, but Hurricane Harvey ripped through southeast Texas (including Port Neches, Texas, the site of the series’ second race in May). Out of respect for those residents displaced by the storm and the devastation in the area, series organizers Tim Seebold and John Schubert looked for a replacement venue for the series finale. More than half of the race teams were affected in some way by Harvey and Irma, with over 40 families located in the Gulf Coast area.
“Originally this race was scheduled for Orange, but with Harvey’s destruction we had to find a new venue,” said series organizer and Formula 1 National Champion Tim Seebold, “We couldn’t just end the series like that.” Seebold worked with NGK Spark Plugs to support a last-minute race, while Sam and Sherron Winer of the APR Super League invited the NGK F1 Powerboat Championship series to be a part of RegattaFest thisFormula 1 boats competing in the NGK F1 Powerboat Championship Series year Pioneers of the early stages of power boat racing, the Winer’s dedicated 31 years to promoting powerboat racing. On October 1st, the couple will announce their retirement from the sport. “NGK is proud to help make this final race happen and grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the Winer’s dedication and passion for the sport,” said General Manager of Marketing Danielle Orlando, “This really brings Formula One racing back to its roots.” Sanctioned by the APBA (American Powerboat Association), conducted by S.P.O.R.T. (Southern Professional Outboard Racing Tour) and in conjunction with the APR Superleague, the final NGK F1 race of 2017 will be action-packed with six racers fighting to finish second place in the series. The race will also be filmed by CBS Sports and NGK Spark Plugs will be at the races, with giveaways and games for show-goers.
