2004 Nissan Murano SL

2004 Nissan Murano SL

Introduced in 2003, this is Nissan's first crossover model, and it continued relatively unchanged until the second generation was introduced. It's based on the Maxima platform, so handling is notably crisp for such a relatively large vehicle.
A "manual shift" mode was introduced in 2004, but it's nothing more than software for the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Transmission fluid is a critical component of any CVT, so make sure to add only Nissan CVT fluid NS-2. Anti-lock brakes use two-wire Hall effect sensors, which means there's a reference voltage on the sensor circuits.
Variations of the VQ35DE engine have been used in many Nissan models, including the Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35. It's been produced in various displacements, and in some models it generated almost 100 hp per liter. Moly-coated pistons, forged rods and micro-finished crank and cams help make it reliable and long-lived. The nylon intake manifold reduces weight and noise, and later versions (DE-K) have variable-length intake runners.

They all have variable valve timing, and the timing chain also drives the water pump. Valve adjustment is accomplished by replacing the lifters.

There are only a few important Service Bulletins. With a CVT, it might be hard to tell when off-the-line power is lower than normal. But with MIL illumination and code P0840 or P0868, the fix is to install an updated transmission valve body and update the software. With MIL illumination and codes indicating problems with the variable valve timing system, check oil pressure first. Poor PCM ground connections are known to set U-codes. Recalls were issued to install a fuel tank protector and replace a faulty alternator.
