Thomas Hough is co-founder, CEO and chairman of the board at Evatran, producer of the Plugless Power wireless charging station for electric vehicles currently being pilot tested by Hertz.

Having acquired the previously named MTC Transformers in 1998, Hough and his management team “have grown the company into a world-class supplier” of transformers and associated services, with an average growth rate of 28 percent per year, he says.

Prior to MTC, Hough was the vice president and general manager of electrical equipment for Tampa Armature Works. He began his career in 1973 with General Electric, where he worked for 16 years in industrial electrical equipment sales and service. He was graduated with a BS in industrial engineering from Purdue University and earned his MBA from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.

Hough recently answered a series questions about the technology and the aftermarket’s role:

How much simpler and more convenient is wireless EV charging?

Buying an electric vehicle also means installing a home recharging station. Why make charging more difficult than it needs to be? With a Plugless Power charging station, you just park, and your battery charges automatically.

Is it just as fast as a cord?

Thanks to our innovations in proximity charging technology, Plugless Power solutions deliver a high-power charge that recharges your EV as quickly as it would charge with a cord.

How does the cost compare to a plug-in solution?

Experts forecast that corded charging units will cost between $1,000 and $3,000. Plugless Power wireless EV charging solutions will be priced competitively in this range.

Is wireless charging proven and safe?

Wireless charging is based on inductive power transfer, which has been in use for over a century. It simply and safely uses electromagnetic fields to transfer electricity between two coils – one installed in your car and the other in your garage. Think of your electric toothbrush.

Isn’t this a technology for the future rather than the present?

Wireless EV charging technology is here today and available from Plugless Power. From now on, you can experience the convenience of never needing to worry about whether you remembered to plug in your EV.

Is your system compatible with existing EVs?

Aftermarket installations are available now for Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt EVs, with retrofits for other electric vehicle makes and models coming soon.

Since the vehicle adapter is connected to the battery without interrupting the performance of the plug, Plugless Power provides the convenience of wireless, hands-free charging, but maintains the ability to charge with a cord on the rare occasion you might need it. Simply put, Plugless Power wireless EV charging stations are the perfect system for gaining the maximum value from your EV investment.

What are some of the benefits of wireless EV charging?

Plugless Power is the innovative EV charging solution that lets you charge EVs hands-free – without wires, worries or limits. Quite simply, this is the most convenient and reliable way to charge EVs. By using wireless charging, Plugless Power eliminates the EV power cord with an automatic charging solution. That means no more getting dirty fighting with a heavy, twisted, and kinked-up cord. And you’ll never forget to plug anything in, so your EV will be ready whenever you are. You just park on it, and your car starts charging right away.

How reliable is your system?

Our simple, dependable EV charging solutions are backed by years of electrical industry experience – for safe, hassle-free charging of your electric vehicles. Additionally, with complete installation and service support from Sears Home Services, Plugless Power customers can feel confident they will receive timely service and quality workmanship from a company they have trusted with their home installations for years.

What about pricing?

Evatran has not released final pricing on the Plugless Power wireless recharging system. Price targets for the system fall under $3,000 for all necessary equipment, which makes the technology competitive with traditional Level II corded infrastructure options.

Evatran plans to release final pricing within the next few months based on demand for the convenient recharging system. A member of the Plugless Power customer service team will notify all reservation holders when this pricing is established, and allow members of the Preferred Customer Group to convert their reservation into an order. Orders will be filled starting in the second half of 2012.
