Jiffy-tite: Know your parts

There's a big difference between "getting a job done" and "getting a job done right."

There's a big difference between "getting a job done" and "getting a job done right." Usually, the distinction between the two is due to the quality of parts used in the installation or repair. When a technician pushes a tube or hose into a cheap replacement fluid connector it can be difficult or nearly impossible to install it correctly. An incorrectly installed fluid fitting can result in leaks, an eventual complete disconnect, or in the worst-case scenario, a damaged engine transmission.

This is precisely why manufacturers recommend replacing factory connectors with OEM hardware. Replacing an OEM connector with a Jiffy-tite connector is the best and safest way to service a vehicle. Why? Because Jiffy-tite parts are used on more than 20 brands of vehicles worldwide. In fact, there are more than 300 million Jiffy-tite devices used on vehicles worldwide, including Chevrolet, Ford, Cadillac, Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz, Harley Davidson, Caterpillar and more.

So when you choose to use a Jiffy-tite connector, you are using a certified OEM connector. The problems with using low cost — and oftentimes low quality — parts, besides the potential for mechanical failure, is the damage done to individual shop's reputations. In a report titled "Independent Aftermarket Image: Why Premium Aftermarket Products Deliver the Best Value," published by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), the document states, "Some aftermarket businesses are jeopardizing the industry’s good reputation by selling and installing inferior, low-cost parts. Price pressures and the misconception that generic auto parts can be as reliable as generic consumer products are putting the aftermarket at risk. "Some in the aftermarket are risking the entire industry’s good reputation by selling and installing inferior, low-cost parts. There is a high price to low cost parts."

Unfortunately, simply ordering the right fittings isn’t enough. Shops need to be wary of all connectors being used, including those that are supplied to auto repair shops. The fittings included with service radiators, coolers, and transmissions are often low cost – and thereby low quality – connectors. If a technician is not looking to ensure that only the best fittings are used, the cheap fittings are often used on the vehicle.

Research shows that repair professionals and shop owners alike rank quality as the top factor in their parts buying decisions – and that they will contact another store if the top quality part isn’t available. A survey of consumers reveals that nearly 90 percent report they are willing to pay more for parts that last longer.

The difference in using authentic Jiffy-tite connectors comes down to what you want used on your radiator, auxiliary cooler, or transmission, especially as the risks associated with unproved fittings can result in O-rings leaking or worse yet, failing because they are either made from improper or poor quality material or are simply the wrong size. Poorly made retainer clips can fail due to poor or incorrect sizing or rapid rusting due to improper material. Moreover, poorly made connectors can be difficult to properly connect to the existing tube, as so many mechanics try to force the tube into the replacement connector.

Low-quality connectors are also known to present problems with poorly machined threads, which can cross thread easily or gall. Unlike cheaply or poorly made connectors, Jiffy-tite connectors are machined to very high standards of fit and function resulting in reliable leak proof performance for the life of the vehicle, and unlike low cost/quality connectors which are not machined to these standards, typically exhibit a shorter life span. Also, lower-quality fittings usually suffer from premature rusting due to low-quality plating, making them all the more difficult or impossible to service the vehicle.

Ultimately, it’s what’s inside that counts, and that is where Jiffy-tite outshines the lower-cost/build-quality competition, and that is why so many OEMs trust Jiffy-tite fittings on their production vehicles in the first place. Jiffy-tite's quality replacement parts provide the best value in the long run, as they provide not only the best assurance of customer satisfaction but minimum comebacks.
