Now that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) released its Federal Automated Vehicles Policy providing safety recommendations, one barrier has been lifted for the adoption of automated and autonomous vehicles.

The fact that the policy did not designate firm rules that might have deterred innovation is good for the future of the industry. The policy points out that 35,092 people died on U.S. roadways in 2015 and 94 percent of crashes were related to human error. Automated vehicles are expected to drastically reduce the number of crashes due to human error.
