MAACO expands in US, Canada

Jan. 1, 2020
MAACO has acquired 1-Day Paint & Body Centers and Sprayglo Auto Refinishing and Body Repair. It is also developing 13 centers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
MAACO®, part of the Driven Brands family of automotive companies, has acquired 1-Day Paint & Body Centers in California, Nevada and New Mexico; and Sprayglo Auto Refinishing and Body Repair, a chain of seven shops located in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. It is also developing 13 centers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Torrance, Calif.-based 1-Day Paint & Body Centers is a 47-year-old brand that has been owned and operated by the Uribe family. It operates 19 locations in the greater Los Angeles area, one in San Diego, two in Las Vegas and two in Albuquerque. Most 1-Day locations will be converted to MAACO Collision Repair & Auto Painting Centers over the next three to six months. The acquisition will triple MAACO’s presence in southern California, a top growth market for the company, as well as merge the best practices and technical expertise of these two great brands.
When the deal closed on Oct. 25, 2013, as part of the purchase, 16 centers in Southern California were franchised to existing MAACO franchisees Matt and Caroline Peach, making them the largest franchisee in the MAACO system. In addition, four 1-Day Centers in southern California will be franchised to four current MAACO operators and four centers — two in Las Vegas and two in Albuquerque — will be franchised to two local MAACO operators, respectively.
"We couldn’t be more excited about our new centers and the opportunity for growth in the region,” says Jose Costa, president, MAACO. “We are grateful to our partner, Sherwin-Williams, who is supporting the transition and will act as our supplier of choice for all former 1-Day locations. With them and great operators like the Peaches on our team, we look forward to providing quality craftsmanship to even more customers as well as becoming valued contributors to the additional communities we will now serve.”
Hahira, Ga.-based Sprayglo Auto Refinishing and Body Repair is a 27-year-old chain of seven shops located in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.
"Sprayglo has a compelling business model and outstanding unit economics in the region," notes Costa. "We are excited about this addition to MAACO family, and are confident this acquisition will result in a win-win for our customers and our brand alike."
MAACO franchisee Mulford Waldrop will purchase five of the existing Sprayglo shops — two in Georgia (Atlanta, Leesburg); one in Florida (Fort Walton Beach); one in Alabama (Saraland); and one in Mississippi (Gulfport) — once the transaction has been completed. Each of these shops will be converted into MAACO centers within six months.
Last but not least, MAACO's five-year agreement with long-time Regina, SK franchisees, Charlene and Marty Klyne, is for the development of 13 MAACO Collision Repair & Auto Painting Centers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The Klynes, former owners and operators of MAACO Regina, have played a variety of roles and been a part of the MAACO family for more than 25 years.  The recipients of many awards, and recognized for the finest in customer satisfaction and quality throughout the chain, the Klynes' Regina MAACO centre was awarded one of the premier honors in the system when it was named a MAACO Certified Centre, a designation representing the highest standards for seamless collision repairs and expert spot painting, and the "BEST OF THE BEST" in the MAACO chain.
“MAACO has been an enormous part of our lives for the last 25 years, and we are looking forward to our next role in the brand’s future,” says Marty Klyne.  “We are excited to be embarking upon this new venture with MAACO®.  We will do everything we can to transfer our knowledge and experience to the system, and hope to play a big part in growing its footprint and presence in the direct repair and collision space on the Prairies.”
