ENERGY STAR portfolio statistics indicate that participating Green Garage Challenge shops will increase their energy efficiency by 10 percent in 2013, while reducing their public utilities usage by more than 20 percent. Forty-eight percent of the nation’s energy, including 70 percent of its electricity, is consumed by buildings, says Schillinger. Collision shops, with their extensive lighting and spray coating operation, tend to devour energy. EPA estimates that if automotive shops reduced their energy consumption by just 10 percent, they would save about $193 million in energy costs and cut more than 1 million tons of greenhouse gases each year.
