I-CAR enhances spot welding course with live demo

On May 21, I-CAR will integrate a live demonstration component into its classroom-led Squeeze-Type Resistance Spot Welding (WCS04) course.

While the overall course content will remain the same, some of the modules of the course will be enhanced by demonstrations on properly setting up machines, aligning and maintaining the electrode tips, making spot welds, identifying and correcting weld defects, understanding how to visually inspect spot welds, and instructions on how to destructively test welds for quality.

Jason Bartanen, I-CAR Technical Director said, “With an increased number of vehicles being manufactured with high-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel, spot-welding is an effective solution for minimizing the heat‑affect zone. The process of spot welding for attaching body panels and components has many other benefits. Among the benefits are decreased damage to corrosion protection and replication of production weld appearance.”

Bartanen continued, “Proper training and an understanding of the practices and techniques employed during spot welding weigh significantly on a technician’s ability to achieve a proper weld. The newly added live demonstration portions of this course will help teach these practical applications and provide students with a visual learning format, which will enhance the learning experience.”

This course fulfills I-CAR ProLevel® 1 training requirements for the Steel Structural Technician and I-CAR ProLevel® 2 training requirements for the Non-Structural Technician. Registration is open and classes are continually being added to the schedule. Visit the I-CAR website (homepage) to search for training in your area.

To learn more about the spot welding techniques and for a preview of some of the course highlights, join I-CAR, in conjunction with ABRN, for the “Spot Welding Techniques” webinar on April 26, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Registration is now open and there is no fee to register. Click here.
