WASHINGTON — The Quality Parts Coalition (QPC) has released an animated video to educate American consumers about the hidden monopoly on auto repair parts, as a part of the “Keep Auto Parts Affordable” campaign.
"In less than two minutes, the video explains how car companies are trying to force car owners to buy auto repair parts only from them after an accident, and in turn, limit choice and increase costs for consumers across the board," the QPC notes.
The video also highlights the current debate in Congress on design patents for collision repair parts: The U.S. Senate and House have introduced the bipartisan, bicameral “Promoting Automotive Repair, Trade, and Sales” (PARTS) Act (H.R. 1663 and S. 780). The bill reduces the period during which car companies can enforce their U.S. design patents on collision repair parts against alternative suppliers from 14 years to 2.5 years.
