3M today announced the inclusion of two custom vehicles and a specially made motorcycle inside the two 3M booth spaces at the 2019 SEMA Show including a custom 2007 Harley-Davidson Soft Tail Special, a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL and a Shelby Daytona Coupe built by legendary builder, Chip Foose. The one-off, custom masterpieces will be on display accompanied by the 3M products that were used to create their stunning finishes.

Starting life as a 2007 Harley-Davidson Soft Tail Standard, the highly-modified motorcycle was built by motorcycle enthusiast and fabricator, Tyler Foster. As owner and lead fabricator at Sik Pipes, a specialty shop focusing on bespoke motorcycle exhaust systems, Foster spent countless hours stripping the motorcycle apart and manipulating almost every surface. In the course of the build, Foster inverted the front fork assembly and lowered the suspension for an aggressive yet performance-oriented ride height, while the engine was swapped out in favor of a more powerful Harley-Davidson Twin Cam 96 cubic inch unit. In addition to creating handmade components, like the fuel tank and seat pan, Foster also created a set of tailor-made exhaust headers for a truly unique sound and appearance. Skilled painter, Kyle Morley, completed the exterior finishing of the motorcycle with a custom candy teal aided by the finishing and polishing power of 3M’s line of superfine abrasives.

In addition to the custom motorcycle, 3M will also be displaying a resto-mod Mercedes-Benz 280SEL created by racer and builder, Josh Stahl and performance shop, Vescio’s Customizing and Restoration. Designed to embody the celebrated AMG racecar, the “Red Pig 2,” this custom sedan utilizes a modern eight cylinder, LS-based powerplant and custom fenders to house the wide, Forgeline wheels. The upgraded power and wider wheels necessitated a more robust frame, to which Stahl looked to Art Morrison, a manufacturer of high-performance chassis and suspension components, to provide a framework strong enough to handle the 600-plus horsepower.

Paying tribute to its forbearer, this one-of-a-kind sedan was repainted in stunning red paint and finished using a variety of 3M products. This included the full line of superfine, 3M™ Trizact™ Abrasives, 3M™ Perfect-It™ EX AC Rubbing Compound, and the 3M™ Perfect-It™ Polishing Pads. This created a mirror-like finish and ensured the paint could hold up the constant racing and autocross courses Stahl puts it through.

Alongside these builds, Chip Foose’s Shelby Daytona Coupe will be on display featuring a number of custom exterior modifications. Built by Foose and his team of fabricators for the first episode of the new season of Overhaulin’ on MotorTrend’s streaming service, the Daytona was provided by Superformance, a continuation car manufacturer specializing in recreations of classic, American racecars. The supercar is the modern equivalent to the Daytona of the 1960’s and is powered by a Roush-sourced, V8 that’s mated to modern running gear and electronics. The episode and new season of Overhaulin’ will be available starting November 16.

The fully-loaded vintage sports car underwent a massive transformation with Foose and his team using a host of 3M products to achieve the end result. 3M™ Cubitron™ Abrasives were used to remove the factory-applied paint and offered the fabricators a fast and efficient method to remove significant amounts of body material. Once the body was primed for paint, 3M™ Accuspray™ guns applied the custom blend of paint formulated by Foose for a truly special Shelby Daytona Coupe.

“At the very core of what makes the SEMA Show so special are the shop owners, builders and fabricators that descend each year, bringing with them some of the wildest, most unique vehicles ever to grace the show floor,” said Dave Gunderson, Vice President & General Manager, 3M Automotive Aftermarket. “We know how much work is put into these machines and we are honored to be displaying these works of art in the 3M booth for all to see.”

During show hours, guests will be able to see the Shelby Daytona and custom motorcycle in the 3M outdoor booth located in the Silver Lots (#61021). The Mercedes-Benz can be found at 3M’s North Hall booth located at #12145. For more information on 3M and its entire line of collision repair products, please visit www.3mcollision.com.
