NO ENGAGEMENT on a BMW 6L45

Complaint:
2006 and up BMW 1,3,5 and X3 Series produced to 3/31/2009, equipped with the 6L45 transmission (GA6L45R),  may exhibit a condition of no engagement when selecting Forward or Reverse ranges. Note: The transmission warning lamp may be on accompanied by DTC’s 56B8- R ratio fault, 56B8-3,5,R ratio fault, 56BB, 1,4,5,6 and R Neutral test, 56BD 2 and 6 Neutral test and or 56BF 1,2,3 and 4 Neutral test.

When the pan is removed, it is immediately noticed that the manual valve is missing (Figure 1).

Cause:
The cause may be, the Manual Valve may have broken where it connects to the Manual link (Figures 2 and 3), allowing the valve to put the transmission into a neutral position.

Correction:
To correct this condition, R&R the valve body assembly and replace the broken Manual Valve with the new valve listed in Service information
