This is the first year for Mazda’s replacement for the 626. The 6i and 6s are almost identical except for wheels, trim level and the five-speed automatic used behind the V6.

The optional six-speed automatic available on later models requires special transmission fluid that’s available at the dealer under P/N JWS3309. Mazda cautions that even topping off with any other of fluid can damage the transmission.

The engine is basically a Ford Duratec with Mazda heads and variable intake camshaft timing. The returnless fuel system means the pressure regulator is part of the pump assembly, so what looks like a regulator on the fuel rail is actually a pulse damper. On the front suspension, both lower control arms on each side connect to the steering knuckle through ball joints.

Maintenance intervals are 7,500 miles, and although Mazda does not specify when to change fluids (except oil), they do say to check the condition of the fluid and belt and replace as necessary.

There are several service bulletins. Connecting or disconnecting a scan tool with the ignition switch on may turn on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and set a number of U-codes; clear the codes, turn off the MIL and turn the key off before unplugging the scan tool to remedy this. On certain VINs, the MIL may illuminate when checking for codes and monitor status. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to fix this.

MIL illumination with DTC P2135 may require a revised throttle body, but P2110, P2135, P0401, P0325 may only require reprogramming the PCM. P2227 may be caused by a broken hose at the EGR boost sensor.

A valve tap on the left bank might be repaired by removing and reinstalling the cam bearing caps, but check the bulletin (01-043/04) for the full procedure. Recalls were issued for a fuel tank leak, a faulty brake fluid level sensor, and faulty fog light sockets that may start a fire.

Mazda’s family sedans have always been driver’s cars, and this one is even more so. Enjoy the test drive.
