How Does a Mass Air Flow Sensor Function? Mass Air Flow Sensors measure the amount of air by weight through changing voltages or frequencies and transmits the information to the ECU (electronic control unit). The ECU uses this as well as other inputs to calculate the proper amount of fuel to be delivered to the injectors.

Some of the symptoms of failure are poor starting, engine surging, engine stalling, check engine light and or no start conditions.  As mass air flow sensors are not serviceable, faulty sensors should be replaced.
