Orlando has been added to the Tire Industry Association (TIA) Certified Automotive Tire Service (ATS) Instructor Training Tour.

The sessions are set for May 22-25 at Mid Florida Tech on West Oak Ridge Road.

Other upcoming training classes are:

• April 17-20: Chicago - Joliet Junior College, Joliet, Ill.

• May 8-11: Los Angeles - City of Long Beach Municipal Training Facility, Long Beach, Calif.

• May 15-18: Minneapolis - Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount, Minn.

• May 22-25: Macon (instead of Atlanta) - Central Georgia Tech, Macon, Ga.

• June 19-22: Boston - MassBay Community College, Ashland, Mass.

The tour is comprised of four-day sessions at local community, junior and technical colleges in 28 metropolitan areas across the U.S., attracting “wonderful reviews from tire technicians who are taking it to the next level participating in the 2012 ATS classes,” according to training director Chris Marnett.

He relates some sample attendee reactions from recent instructional events:

• “Matt White did an awesome job and I felt the classes helped me appreciate the importance of safe and proper procedures for both myself and the customer.”

• “Huge wealth of information. The class educated me both on core-concepts and ideas, as well as, technical details. All the supplemental materials are great.”

• “The willingness of the instructors and classmates to share information and taking the time to make sure all the information is understood is great.”

• “I enjoyed being able to interact with all the vendors in the class and the hands-on portion.”

The Certified ATS Instructor Program is a four-day in-depth classroom and hands-on educational opportunity that industry professionals must successfully complete in order to return to their respective places of business to train technicians to prepare them for certification. TIA has used the train-the-trainer approach to train and/or certify more than 70,000 technicians since 1997, Marnett says.

Certified ATS includes safety guidelines and step-by-step procedures for all aspects of passenger car and light truck tire service including wheel installation with the proper torque and tire repair. It also includes a full day of instruction on Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), so technicians have a thorough understanding of the requirements for the most popular domestic and import vehicles.
