Lumileds receives award for Best Business-to-Consumer Educational Article

Lumileds, a subsidiary of Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG), earned a 2016 Automotive Communications Award for its educational article on lighting safety. The award was presented during the 2016 Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) Show in Las Vegas, NV, on November 1, 2016 during the 2016 Automotive Communications Awards ceremony, which was sponsored by Women in Auto Care, a segment of the Car Care Council. Lumileds won the award for its educational article entitled, “Safety in numbers – Why it pays to replace headlight bulbs in pairs.” It was developed as a prelude to the full global launch of its new Philips Lighting Safety Campaign, which is aimed at encouraging both vehicle owners and service technicians to change headlight bulbs in pairs, whenever they need to replace a bulb that has been damaged, failed, or starting to dim. Typically, motorists only replace the bad bulb and this is not advisable because it can result in an unbalanced or unpredictable headlight beam and potentially present a safety risk.

Lumileds wanted to educate the market on the safety ramifications. The article explains how, from the driver’s perspective, the road ahead will not be properly lit and the driver will not get the full benefit of the vehicle’s headlights as the carmaker originally intended. It also explains the safety risk for oncoming drivers because an oncoming car with a bad light will be harder to see, difficult to position on the road, and potentially confused with a single headlight vehicle such as a motorcycle or scooter. Philips also addresses the convenience factor noting that the other bulb will eventually fail and require an additional service visit.

Ann-Marie Hines, Sr. Marketing Manager at Lumileds, noted, “We are extremely excited about winning this prestigious award. While it is a true testament of the hard work and creativity of our entire team, it also validates our efforts to promote public service and safety.”
