The nation's demand for auto technicians is expected to grow about 17 percent from 2010 to 2020, the American Automobile Association (AAA) reports. This will add 124,800 jobs for a total of 848,200, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. Overall, auto technicians earned an average of $35,790, but 10 percent earned more than $59,590, in 2010, the most recent year for which the BLS has data, AAA reports.

AAA has over 8,000 owned or approved repair facilities across the U.S. employing thousands of technicians.

The Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition gives students a chance to improve their employment opportunities. Participating students' names and addresses are given to Ford Motor Co., Ford and Lincoln dealerships, AAA Clubs, contributing sponsors and supporting technical schools.
