Aftermarket Business World columnist Larry Silvey says dealer and independent repair shops need to make substantial investments in equipment and personnel to survive in his column, “Auto techs get their due.” He cites a dealership executive in Texas who says that dealers need to invest in fixed operations to survive the next new car sales downturn.

Silvey questions if independent shops can match the $674,000 that this Texas dealer spent on new service repair equipment in an 18-month period. He suggests that independent repair shops turn to suppliers and distributors for help – not financial help – but with administrative and technical training. They have provided training to independent shops in the past and it’s in their best interests to do even more now.
In addition to training, aftermarketers need to stop treating technicians as “second-class citizens.” They can do that by improving technician pay, working conditions and making them eligible for bonuses and trips that other employees can compete for.
Successful independent shops need to do what it take so that they can seek new technicians using the recruitment tag line, “Do you want to work with a company that is changing the auto industry?” Click here to read the entire article.
