Aftermarket needs to treat technicians as true professionals

May 20, 2016
Some dealerships are boosting the image of their technicians in how they treat them. If the aftermarket is going to keep up, it will have to do the same and stop treating them as “second-class citizens.” The dealers and independent repair shops that treat them as professionals will be the winners.

Aftermarket Business World columnist Larry Silvey says dealer and independent repair shops need to make substantial investments in equipment and personnel to survive in his column, “Auto techs get their due.”  He cites a dealership executive in Texas who says that dealers need to invest in fixed operations to survive the next new car sales downturn.

Silvey questions if independent shops can match the $674,000 that this Texas dealer spent on new service repair equipment in an 18-month period. He suggests that independent repair shops turn to suppliers and distributors for help – not financial help – but with administrative and technical training. They have provided training to independent shops in the past and it’s in their best interests to do even more now.

In addition to training, aftermarketers need to stop treating technicians as “second-class citizens.” They can do that by improving technician pay, working conditions and making them eligible for bonuses and trips that other employees can compete for.

Successful independent shops need to do what it take so that they can seek new technicians using the recruitment tag line, “Do you want to work with a company that is changing the auto industry?” Click here to read the entire article.
