The president’s plan, which would establish an energy trust to support research into cost-effective technologies, including advanced vehicle technologies, is supported by MEMA for encouraging innovation and advancements in vehicle technologies – improvements that are imperative to the nation’s success.
According to MEMA, the plan would only be successful if the program is implemented to include motor vehicle parts manufacturers as that industry accounts for 30 percent of the total $18 billion in automotive R&D investment. Additionally, parts manufacturers add more than 70 percent of new vehicle value through intellectual capital and the deployment of established and emerging technologies.
“This is an opportunity to take advantage of the momentum of change that is now occurring in our industry sector and to learn from the lessons of the past,” McKenna wrote.
