Interstate Batteries welcomes new leadership

Jan. 1, 2020
On May 1, CEO Carlos Sepulveda will pass the Interstate Batteries leadership to the man he has mentored for the role for almost a decade, Scott Miller.
Through his 23 years with the company, especially the last nine years as president and CEO of Interstate Batteries®, Carlos Sepulveda has expanded the Dallas-based battery company from selling automotive batteries to every portable power solution imaginable. From alkaline, camera, tool and other household batteries to major industrial back up power solutions, Interstate has grown to be the largest Distributor-based company in America. On May 1, Sepulveda will begin a new role as executive chairman at Triumph Bancorp, Inc., passing the Interstate Batteries leadership to the man he has mentored for the role for almost a decade, Scott Miller.

“My time with Interstate Batteries has been the highlight of my career,” says Sepulveda, who joined Interstate Batteries in 1990 and was named president and CEO in 2004.  “I am thrilled to see Scott step up to this role and lead Interstate into a new era.  I know he will grow the brand and expand the culture that makes this company unique and exceptional.”

Under Sepulveda’s leadership, Interstate’s sales volume increased from 12 million to 17 million units; the All Battery franchise division was launched and now numbers 200 franchises; and the enterprise annual revenue increased from $650 million to $1.5 billion.  With the private investment group opportunity presenting itself, Sepulveda informed Interstate Batteries chairman Norm Miller the time was right for transitioning the company leadership.  He will continue to serve as a member of Interstate Batteries’ Executive Board, as he has since 1995.

“This seamless transition of leadership is really all part of the plan,” Norm Miller says.  “Scott has grown up in this business and has the confidence and 22 years experience to lead the company.  He is the right leader at the right time for Interstate Batteries.”

Scott Miller

Two words describe the career of Scott Miller at Interstate Batteries® -- outrageously dependable!  From a 14-year-old riding with route sales managers servicing retail dealers to senior vice president of the distributor operations and innovation team, the 44-year-old Miller has seen and done it all at Interstate to prepare himself to take the leadership reigns one day.

“Wow!  Blessed, honored, humbled, ecstatic, outrageously optimistic!  Those words best describe the way I feel about the opportunity in front of me,” Miller says. “I love Interstate Batteries. It is a huge part of my life since I was a kid. It has been a dream of mine to serve distributors, franchisees, team members, suppliers, vendors – the people that contribute to the success of this company every day – in this capacity.”

Scott Miller has served the Dallas-based battery retailer in multiple key positions since starting with the company in 1991 as a route sales manager in Central Texas before taking on company roles as national account executive and manager, independent distributor regional manager, director of marketing, director of Interstate-owned territories, vice president of creative communications and events, vice president of Interstate All Battery and most recently as senior vice president of distributor operations & innovation team.

“Carlos has been a tremendous leader for our entire enterprise, including me personally,” Miller says.  “He has made immense contributions to the foundation of this business, and we have experienced extraordinary growth under his leadership. I could not be more confident about what our team will achieve as we work together to create value for all those whom Interstate Batteries touches.”

Married to Donna and the father of their three children - Braden, Grant, and Matti -- Miller graduated from Colorado Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in business management.
