The Home Depot is testing a new business opportunity, the Do-It-Yourself automotive segment, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Carol Tomé, chief financial officer for Atlanta-based Home Depot, revealed the company’s interest while talking to the Rotary Club of Atlanta on Sept. 21.

Tomé said the company currently has “Do-It-Yourself Automotive” in a pilot program in about 50 stores across the country.

“We really like what we are seeing,” she said. “It’s replacing your windshield wipers and spark plugs. It’s a natural extension of what we do. I like what I see.”

Tomé told the Chronicle that many of the contractors who are Home Depot’s top customers are hands-on people who are able to work on their cars. By selling auto parts, they can do more one-stop shopping. About 4 percent of Home Depot’s customers account for 40 percent of its business, she said.

Tomé said a decision had not been made to implement the program company-wide.
