Repairing newer cars requires training, new tools and methods

Dec. 22, 2016
Collision repair shops need to get training in advanced materials repair and invest in new tools to repair newer cars.

Karen Cover, social media coordinator for the UBM Americas Automotive Group, wrote a blog “Getting involved in advanced materials repair.”

The shops that invested in aluminum repair early on are now in a great position: They have an edge in the competition and prime spots in OEM certification programs. Now it’s time for the rest of the industry to get on board and get much-needed advanced materials training.

The use of new high-strength steels, and other materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber have been a game changer for the collision repair industry. These materials require new tools and new repair methods to achieve a quality and safe repair. And it all starts with training.

Repair shop owners and techs must understand these changes and recognize that old repair methods won’t get the job done on cars made from these new materials. Once that hurdle is cleared, they need to commit to training to learn the new repair methods and invest in the tools required for the repairs.
